Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, Salzburg

Gebirgskette vom Wildkogel aus betrachtet

Nationalpark Hohe Tauern – the largest nature ressort in middle Europe – has been established in 1981. Today it covers parts of the disctrict of Salzburg, Tyrol and Carinthia. The area size is about 1800 km². The altitude difference is around 2600m.
The appearance has been determined mostly by the ice ages: After the last ice age 12000 years ago the area was a stone dessert that became inhabited slowly by plants. Even today many animals and plants in the high mountain area live a life close to their existence minimum.
In the forests you will find Norway spruce, larch trees, "Zirben", around 10000 kinds of animals such as golden eagle, ibex, bearded vulture and one third of all kind of Austrian plants such as edelweiss, orchid, arnica.
Salzburg part of Nationalpark: Wildgerlostal, Krimmler Achental, Ober- und Untersulzbachtal, Habachtal, Hollersbachtal, Felbertal, Stubachtal, Kapruner Tal, Fuscher Tal, Rauriser Tal, Gasteiner Tal, Großarltal and Murtal.

A constant change: Glaciers

Where the high temperatures of summer are not high enough to melt the snowfall from winter, glaciers grow. Those newly film of snow transforms into firn and further to glacier.
Glaciers in the Nationalpark are the Großvenediger or the Pasterzengletscher (9 km in length).

Cultivation of the Tauerntal valleys

Alm mit Kühen

Probably the settlement started on the search for minerals in the Tauerntal valleys. Next the cultivation of zones above the forest border started.
