Krimml falls |
With 380m in total the Krimml falls are the largest water falls throughout Europe. The lowest part of the three falls can be reached after a short walk from the car park (10 minutes). From our house you can go for a bicycle ride to the first fall (around 40 minutes) or go by car/bus.
Next to the falls you will find a zigzag mountain road for about 4 km that guides directly into the Krimmler Achental valley.
Structured in three parts
The highest fall ("Obere Fall") has a height of 140m. Next after a small flat piece called "Schönangerl" the middle fall starts (100m height). The bottom fall also has a height of 140m.
The altitude at the "Kuersinger Platz" is 1090m, at the "Schoenangerl" 1330 m and at the "Schettbruecke" 1470m.
The source of the water is the "Krimmler Kees" (Glacier, around 5,3 km2). On its "journey" the glacial stream gets nourished by further glaciers. Per year a stream of around 177 milliard litres of water flows down the valley.
Since 1983 the Krimml falls are part of the nature reserve Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. The area around the falls is famous for its species-richness: 62 kinds of birds such as "Weidenmeise", "Fichtenkreuzschnabel", "Ringdrossel", "Tannenhaeher"; the forest contains mainly of Norway spruce; 327 different kinds of moss, lichen and ferns …
